Painted by Thomas Sully in 1819, The Passage of the Delaware dominates the Art of the Americas wing at the Museum of Fine Arts. Approximately 12 feet tall and 18 feet wide, this painting grabs the eye from the first step into the gallery. Portraying Washington on his horse overlooking the organization of his troops, this painting shows Washington's elegance and pride, as well as his glory. The pride the painter imbued in Washington's grandeur exemplified the pride most americans felt in Washington. In the background a red glow of the rising sun is seen, lighting the way for the soon-to-be victorious soldiers on their attack of the German mercenaries at Trenton.
